AI has made creating content easier than ever. And as someone who works in digital marketing, I’m a proponent of using tools that save time. However, recently I’ve noticed something when scrolling through social media: everything is starting to sound the same and look the same.
The same overly polished captions. The same sentence structures. The same dramatic pauses and perfectly placed emojis. You can almost tell when a caption was copied straight from an AI tool and posted without a second thought.
And that’s where AI-generated content becomes a problem.
Your customers want to hear from you
People follow small businesses because there’s a person, story, or personality behind them. Your social media is one of the easiest places to show that. If every caption sounds like it could have been written for any business in your industry, you start losing the thing that makes your brand different in the first place.
Your opinions, sense of humor, expertise, stories, and even the way you naturally phrase things are part of your brand. AI doesn’t automatically know those things.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use AI
I use AI, and most marketers do.
It can be incredibly helpful for brainstorming content ideas, getting past writer’s block, creating an outline, or turning one idea into a few different pieces of content. The problem is when AI goes from being a tool to being the voice of your business. If you ask AI to write a caption, treat what it gives you as a first draft. Rewrite the parts you’d never actually say. Add your own experience. Delete the unnecessary fluff. Make it sound like something you would send to a friend or say to a customer.
The brands that feel human are going to stand out
As AI-generated content becomes more common, I think authentic content is actually going to become more valuable. You don’t need every caption to be perfectly written. You need it to sound like you.
Use AI to make marketing easier. Just don’t let it erase the personality that made people want to follow your business in the first place.
